Assessment Practices for Effective Teaching

Understanding what students know and what they need to learn is crucial to effective teaching. Daily formative assessment and testing along with other forms of formal assessment are key to gaining this understanding, but many teachers lack resources to incorporate strategic assessment practices in their teaching. This course equips students to create assessments and rubrics for a course that they are preparing to teach and provides techniques to adjust teaching in response to assessment. As a foundation for this practical work, students will study formative and summative classroom assessment practices and will write a personal philosophy of assessment that will serve as a guide for teaching and reporting decisions that need to be made in their own classroom. This course will be practical for all teachers including those who primarily use curriculum tests.
